Diamonds Made by Time

3 minute read

There is something extraordinary about knowing your diamond is natural.

Not simply because it sparkles, is beautifully cut or looks wonderful on the hand. Lab grown diamonds can do all of those things.

We mean natural in the oldest sense of the word.

Formed deep within the earth, under immense heat and pressure, long before any of us were here to admire it.

A Very Long Beginning

Natural diamonds began forming billions of years ago.

Which is quite difficult to comprehend when you are looking at something small enough to sit on your finger.

There is no designer behind the material. No production schedule. Just time, geology and an extraordinary set of natural circumstances.

Perhaps that is part of the fascination.

More Than the Sparkle

A laboratory grown diamond has essentially the same chemical composition and crystal structure as a natural diamond. To the eye, the distinction may be impossible to make.

But for some of us, knowing matters.

Jewellery has always carried meaning beyond what can be seen.

We care that a ring belonged to our grandmother. We care where an antique piece came from. We care that a Cartier bracelet is actually Cartier.

And some of us care that a diamond came from the earth.

Not because anybody else can tell.

Because we can.

Made Once. Worn Many Times.

There is something else we love about natural diamonds.

They existed long before they became jewellery, and the good ones will continue their journey long after their first setting.

A diamond can move from an engagement ring to a pendant. From one generation to another. From one owner to someone who sees something entirely new in it.

Some have already had several lives.

We rather like the thought that they have many more to come.

Knowing What You Own

Of course, sentiment should never replace certainty.

The distinction between natural and laboratory grown diamonds cannot always be made by appearance alone. Appropriate testing and, where relevant, independent laboratory certification can provide confidence in what you are buying.

At Edmonds & Pearce, we believe the description of a diamond should be clear about exactly what it is.

No ambiguity. No clever wording.

Just confidence in what you own.

Why We Choose Natural

The Edmonds & Pearce collection is centred on natural diamonds.

It is a choice, rather than a judgement.

For us, part of the pleasure lies in their rarity, their history and the idea that something remarkable can pass through many hands and many generations.

And there is something about wearing a diamond created billions of years before you arrived that puts Tuesday morning into perspective.

Perhaps that is why we love them.

Not just because they sparkle.

Because they have been here all along.
